Abstract

In this presentation, Professor Li Ou will read closely ‘La Belle Dame sans Merci’, one of John Keats’s (1795-1821) canonical works, as exemplifying the British Romantic poet’s sceptical poetics. Professor Li will first introduce some of Keats’s general concepts about poetry and then focus on his 1819 ballad ‘La Belle Dame sans Merci’ to discuss what constitutes a “sceptical poetics”: the textual instability of the poem, the indeterminacy of its plot, the ambiguity of the femme fatale figure, its narrative layer and dramatic perspective, as well as its revision of the ballad tradition. The talk is part of Professor Li’s current research on ‘Keats and Scepticism’, a project that contributes to the rising scholarly reexamination of Keats’s engagement with diverse intellectual traditions.

主讲人介绍

李鸥，香港中文大学英文系副教授。曾任教于北京外国语大学英语系、北京大学英语系。出版专著《济慈和延疑力》(Keats and Negative Capability, London & New York: Continuum, 2009）、《济慈和怀疑主义》（Keats and Sceptical Poetics, under contract with Routledge）。最新发表论文有《济慈、蒙田和〈哈姆雷特〉》（收入East-West Dialogues: The Transferability of Concepts in the Humanities, Peter Lang, 2021) 、《英国浪漫主义在中国的接受、修正与再生》（收入Asian English: Histories, Texts, Institutions, Palgrave, 2021)等。主要研究领域为英国浪漫主义诗歌及中英文学文化比较。英国济慈基金会、美国济慈雪莱协会会员。曾受邀在圣安德鲁大学、慕尼黑大学等校讲学。

主持人介绍

张逸旻，浙江大学文学院（筹）特聘研究员，美国密歇根大学访问学者。研究方向为美国现当代诗歌、跨媒介诗学。出版译著有安妮·塞克斯顿诗集《所有我亲爱的人》等。学术评论见《外国文学评论》《外国文学》《读书》《书城》《上海文化》等期刊。
